What is Personal Branding?
Personal branding is basically the way you market yourself to the world. What other people think about you is your personal brand. In some ways you can’t control it but there are some influences that you obviously have over it.
Personal branding is unavoidable. As others interact with you a mental association is formed and it connects you with certain labels within a few seconds. You will be labeled by other people. It is unavoidable for you as well as others. It is happened because our brain is wired to recognize patterns and form associations. The labels are attached to you by the people. It is a part of personal brand. Branding is everywhere. For example if you email or have a conversation with a friend or family member it can be considered as your branding. Your dress, eating habit and talk all together contribute to your brand. Just think of your brand as the summations of all concepts that are there in people’s mind.
What is your external brand?
The technique of projecting yourself to the world is known as external brand. An element of choice is there. You can take a decision how much you will say or write to convey an image about yourself. Your image will influence others and they will decide whether they will communicate with your or not. Accidentally you may hesitate upon this image or you can target a specific type of image purposely. According to the author the best image to project is that which reveals you best. Being yourself implies being honest.
According to author it can make little sense of pretending to be something that you are not. I can’t pretend to be a doctor with a Ph.D in Philosophy because I am not the person. I could pick up a fake Ph.D degree from a unqualified college and call myself doctor but what is the point. In this mental situation in order to get what I want I must pretend to be something that I am not. But should I disconnect from myself to get what I want to be. Actually it is no sense to me projecting false image. It can stop my real entity.
What is your internal brand?
In addition to your external brand, that is thinkable matter of people regarding personal branding. You should have an internal brand. This is what you think of yourself. Three adjectives are there to describe you. You should take a moment to think and jot them down. Do you feel that this brand correctly represent you. Can this brand reflect you perfectly? Is it the same image which you project to the world?
As far as my idea it is best to pick up three adjectives. That is intelligent, curious and direct. I use other words to describe myself such as honest, growth-oriented, happy, independent, unconventional, deep, compassionate, purposeful, ambitious etc. your choice can totally be different from mine but that is totally I think regarding myself now.
You can ask yourself if your internal personal brand matches with external brand you project with others. You don’t require knowing what others think regarding you but you should aware if there is any part of yourself that you cannot accept and want to hide from others. You find some areas that you are hiring due to lack of self acceptance but this may make you unfortunate to see the aspects as the assets they really are.
